Development of ultrasound sequence for highly efficient sonodynamic treatment -- Investigation of amount of reactive oxygen species generated by several ultrasound sequences using sonochemiluminescence --

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Sonodynamic treatment (SDT) is one of non-invasive modalities for cancer treatments using high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). In a SDT treatment, cavitation bubbles are forced to collapse by HIFU, and they generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), which contributes to the treatment of cancer cells by their cytotoxicity. SDT can treat cancer with less acoustic energy than that in a HIFU treatment, and be applied to organs where the HIFU thermal treatment approach is difficult. On the other hand, the size of region treated by a SDT treatment in one exposure is small as a HIFU treatment; therefore it is needed to improve the energy and time efficiency of ROS generation. In this study, the effect of HIFU exposure sequences on ROS generation was investigated.
