Improvement of instantaneous frequency estimation by finite order Hilbert transformer using notch filter

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Frequency estimation is used in a wide range of fields such as radar, communications, voice, and medicine. One of the methods is to use instantaneous frequency. In this method, a complex signal called an analysis signal is generated, and the instantaneous frequency is obtained by temporally differentiating the instantaneous phase of this complex signal. In general, analytic signal is generated using Hilbert transformers. However, because Hilbert transformers with finite orders have approximation errors, the estimated instantaneous frequency includes the component derived from the approximation error in addition to the original signal component. This error can be suppressed by making the Hilbert transformer higher order, but the increase in the order results in an increase in the delay for obtaining the instantaneous frequency. In this paper, we propose a method to remove the effect of approximation error by using notch filter. As a result, even with a low-order Hilbert transformer, it is possible to estimate the instantaneous frequency with high accuracy.
