[Invited Lecture] A study of satellite 5G

(in English) In the fifth generation mobile communications system (5G), in addition to the expansion of use cases, it is also considered to serve the connectivity into low-densely populated areas. Because a base station cannot be deployed in mountainous and oceanic areas, it is quite effective to utilize base stations on satellite and unmanned aerial vehicle for such areas. In the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, 5G systems using satellite have been studied. For example, in the European SAT5G project, four use cases of satellite 5G for enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) are defined: 1) edge delivery & offload for multimedia content and NFV software, 2) 5G fixed backhaul, 3) 5G to premises, and 4) 5G moving platform backhaul. We also have studied a satellite/terrestrial integrated mobile communication system (STICS), in which a mobile terminal can connect both terrestrial mobile communication systems and satellite base station, and have proposed several schemes for performance improvement of satellite 5G by applying 5G elemental technologies. In this study, we introduce some of the satellite 5G schemes and their practical challenges.
