Effects of relative spatial positions of two Kanji characters on lexical decision performance

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) When we try to recognize words, we often fail to notice typos. Major factors that underlie such ``noticeability'' would be visual features (features of words as images) and phonological features---here we focus on the former. For Western languages such as English, there is a long history of research on the influence of visual features on word recognition, but there is not much discussion about Japanese, especially about Kanji compound words. For an example of investigations on visual-feature effects of Kanji compound word recognition, it has been shown that the outline shape of Kanji characters that make up two-Kanji compound words affects lexical decision performance. In this report, we have designed a lexical decision task where two Kanji characters were scattered on the screen, in order to eliminate the influence of regular mutual positions of Kanji characters in texts and extract effects of individual Kanji characters. As a result, unusual mutual positions lead to poorer decision performance than usual ones. One distinctive result was that decision performance was poorer for Kanji words with higher levels of the sum of the stroke densities of two Kanji characters.
