[Poster Presentation] Japanese children's knowledge of zibun and kare
Naho Orita (TUS), Hajime Ono (TUA), Naomi Feldman, Jeffrey Lidz (UMD) TL2019-25
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) While the Japanese reflexive zibun can be bound both locally and across clause boundaries (Inoue 1976 among many), the third person pronoun kare cannot take a local antecedent. However, we show that in speech to children long-distance reflexive zibun and pronoun kare do not occur, leading us to ask about children’s knowledge. We show that children, unlike adults, incorrectly reject the long-distance antecedent for zibun, while being able to access this antecedent for a pronoun kare.
