Island constraints in L2 English sentence comprehension by Japanese speakers
Itsuki Minemi, Yuki Hirose (UT) TL2019-10
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Previous studies have proposed that typological differences between speakers’ first (L1) and second languages (L2), such as wh-dependency type (wh-movement/-in-situ) or word order (SVO/SOV), induce insensitivity to syntactic constraints called “islands” in the L2 sentence comprehension [1]. This study tested this hypothesis by examining whether Japanese learners respect island constraints during the comprehension of English. Two self-paced reading experiments demonstrated that learners are sensitive to island constraints in processing relative clauses (RCs) and wh-dependencies in English. This study suggests that L2 learners of English construct a highly detailed structural representation and respect syntactic constraints during L2 comprehension.
