| (in English) | Japanese polite language (teineigo) varies with the speaker-addressee relationship as well as social norms. In corpus studies, Japanese children show early correct use of these forms compared to use of polite language in English. To confirm this experimentally, we tested whether 3- to 6-year-old children could vary in their use of teineigo for different video situations and we found that children used the correct forms depending on the formality of the situation and this ability did not vary with age. However, it is not clear how they acquire these abilities early in development, because there is a social norm that Japanese parents and children use non-polite plain speech with each other. We performed a large-scale corpus analysis of polite language using a probabilistic measure of intended addressee. We found that the parental input varied with addressees in a way that could support the learning of politeness distinctions. |
