Dynamic 3D imaging of articular cartilage by X-ray phase-contrast CT

(in English) With the increase of the elderly population, measures against osteoarthritis (OA), one of musculoskeletal disorders, are required. Since the early symptoms of OA are caused by degeneration of articular cartilage, it is important to understand its structure and function. Therefore, in this study, we developed a dynamic 3D imaging method by X-ray phase contrast CT and applied it to the behavior analysis of articular cartilage tissue subjected to repetitive loading / unloading. SPring-8 radiation was used as the X-ray source, and the phase shift due to the cartilage density difference was detected by the Moiré method using the Talbot interferometer. As a result of analysis, it was detected that the density change due to cartilage compression was different depending on the thickness direction of the cartilage. Changes in cartilage density reflect changes in collagen distribution, suggesting that this method is useful for evaluating the local behavior of cartilage tissue.
