Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) With the development of IoT and 5G networks, the next-generation intelligent transportation system has been attracting more and more attention. Dynamic mapping has been considered one of the key technologies to reduce traffic accidents and congestion in such a new intelligent transportation system, where not only conventional geo-location information like static mapping information but also dynamic mapping information such as mobile vehicles and changing traffic signals need to be collected and transferred to cloud, where the navigation information can be generated and distributed to each vehicle. However, as the number of vehicles and sensors keeps growing, a huge volume of sensor traffic that may overload the central server. In this paper, we propose a CUPS (control and user plane separation)-based dynamic mapping architecture to offload dynamic mapping information to local edge server to reduce the overload of the central server. There are a couple of merits of our proposal: (i) we can reduce the overhead of the central server because we only need to abstract and send global dynamic mapping information from the edge servers to the central server; (ii) we can reduce the response latency since the navigation information can be generated and distributed from a local edge server, which is much closer to the vehicles than the central server in cloud. The capabilities of our system have been evaluated using a prototype CUPS system. The experimental results have shown that our system achieves throughput improvement by more than four times, and response latency reduction by 73.5ms compared to the conventional central server approach. Although these results are still obtained from the preliminary evaluations using our prototype system, we believe that our proposed architecture gives insight into how we utilize CUPS and edge computing to enable efficient dynamic mapping application.
