Low-Complexity MMSE Channel Estimation in Massive MU-MIMO System

(in English) In massive multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) systems,
the base station (BS) requires accurate channel state information
(CSI). In the time division duplex (TDD) system, usually the CSI
is estimated by the pilot signal transmitted from users. However,
the estimation accuracy of CSI is degraded by the effect of pilot
contamination which occurs when the non-orthogonal pilot is
reused by users in neighboring cells. In this report, we propose a
low-complexity minimum mean squared error (MMSE) channel
estimation method for the massive MU-MIMO system to solve the
pilot contamination problem. Our proposed method combines the
singular value decomposition (SVD) with the traditional MMSE
estimation method. The computational complexity is reduced
by restricting the dimensions both of the long-term channel
covariance matrices and received pilots. The simulation results
show that the proposed method outperforms the traditional
MMSE estimation method in terms of the normalised mean
square error (NMSE) with a large number of antennas at BS.
