We numerically study the receiver sensitivity degradation of a DSP-assisted direct-detection receiver for Stokes vector-modulated signals, in which a state of polarization of light are designated as a signal point. Considering the modulation format employing eight signal points on a cubic lattice in the Stokes space with the symbol rate of 25 GSymbol/s, we calculated bit error rates of the received signal to evaluate the performance degradation in the presence of receiver noise and fiber dispersion. Simulations of back-to-back configuration comparing the effects of thermal noise from the load resistance of the optical frontend and that of photoelectric shot noise confirm that thermal noise is dominant when using the commercially available 25 Gbp/s-class photo-receivers. We also performed simulations of fiber transmission in a standard single mode fiber, assuming the equalization of polarization in the receiver using one tap FIR filter with three inputs and three outputs. It is foreseen that transmission up to about eight kilometers will be possible without dispersion compensation or equalization. |
