Ultrasonic wave properties in swine skull in the MHz range

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Ultrasound is now used for the brain treatments. However, the skull is an anisotropic and heterogeneous medium which consists of three layers, the outer (cortical bone), the diploe (cancellous bone) and the inner (cortical bone). We should understand complex wave propagation in the skull. In this study, we have experimentally studied propagation characteristics of ultrasound in the swine skull diploe. In the thickness direction, ultrasound velocity was almost constant although the value of BV/TV slightly changed. The apparent attenuation values were high in the initial state of propagation.
