Preliminary Experimental Study on a Two-Frequency Secondary-Radar System to Detect Pedestrians beyond Blind Corners

(in English) Authors are studying on a two-frequency secondary radar system to prevent traffic accidents between pedestrians and vehicles at intersections with poor visibility. In order to detect pedestrians over blind corners, it is preferable to use radio waves from HF to UHF bands. Because these frequency bands are already been very busy, the available bandwidth will be strongly limited. To achieve higher range resolution under the limited frequency bandwidth, we propose two-frequency CW radar with phase detection. Moreover, the pedestrian system should be simple secondary radar responding with doubled frequency signal from the input radio wave, to reduce the impact of complex reflections and scatterings at intersections.
In this paper, we will report on the principles of the proposed system, proof of concept experiment with cable emulation system, and basic experiment on range characteristics measured inside a large radio anechoic chamber.
