The stochastic nature of quantum computers allows the generation of true random numbers. This is because the measurement outcome is probabilistic under the axioms of quantum physics. While the classical computer’s output can be predicted with knowledge of its input and program, the classical output of a quantum computer cannot be predicted [M. Herrero-Collantes and J. C. Garcia-Escartin, Rev. Mod. Phys. 89, 015004 (2017)]. This unpredictability is essential to the generation of true random numbers. In theory, therefore, quan- tum computers should be capable of producing true random numbers. We show that the output generated by a 20-qubit superconducting quantum computer (IBM 20Q Tokyo) with a simple circuit using the Hadamard gate on all 20 qubits does not qualify as true random numbers. The reason behind this is the existence of errors. Firstly, the probability of 0s and 1s of individual qubits were not equal, thereby causing a bias in the output. Secondly, the output of the qubits were correlated. However, with a combination of the Samuelson’s extractor and the von Neumann’s extractor, uniform bit sequences were extracted. |
