Embroidered wearable antennas composed of conductive yarns are inherently conformal, light-weight, and flexible and therefore easy to incorporate into conventional apparel using ordinary fabrication techniques with a computerized sewing machine. A microstrip patch antenna is one of the most promising antennas for the next-generation conformal wearable wireless system, since patch antenna's ground plane can reduce undesired effects caused by the human body. The radiation characteristics of electromagnetically coupled embroidered microstrip patch antennas composed of conductive yarns have been investigated in this paper. The effects of mechanical instability in antenna's dimensional parameters on the radiation characteristics have also been assessed based on the measurements for several embroidered sample patch antennas, which are electromagnetically fed through the embroidered microstrip line. The stability of resonant frequency, bandwidth, gain, and radiation pattern are measured and assessed for different combinations of dimensional parameters. Compared to the conventional probe fed microstrip patch antennas, which usually need to have so-called direct mechanical contact to the feed line, it has been confirmed that electromagnetically coupled microstrip patch antennas demonstrate better repeatability even when they are embroidery fabricated on a mechanically flexible felt substrate with conductive yarns. |
