A consideration on frequency control of varactor-loaded dual-band single-layer multi-ring microstrip antennas with reduced bias circuits

(in English) This paper presents reduced bias circuit designs of frequency-tunable dual-band multi-ring microstrip antennas with varactor diodes. Two varactor diodes are mounted on each square ring patch antenna fed by an L-probe to realize a frequency-tunable dual-band microstrip antenna. Resonant frequency of the ring patches can be controlled by the DC bias voltage applied to the varactor diodes. In order to develop a frequency-tunable multiband microstrip antenna with multiple ring patches, reduction the number of the bias circuits is important. In this paper, the bias circuits for negative bias terminals of the frequency-tunable dual-band multi-ring microstrip antenna are replaced with vias shorting the ring patch to the ground plane at the zero-voltage plane. Furthermore, upper half areas of the ring patches can be removed with the vias to miniaturize the dual-band multi-ring microstrip antenna. It is demonstrated that two resonant frequencies of the proposed antennas with the reduced bias circuits and the miniaturized patches are controlled by the bias voltages for the two patches almost independently.
