A variety of applications of free-space laser propagation such as measurements, communications, energy transmissions, etc. have been proposed. In particular, the application to communications attracts attentions because of the possibility of increase in the data transmission rate compared with the current radio communications. So far, successful demonstrations using satellites and/or aircrafts have been reported. The research and development plans that inherit these results are in progress. The meetings of standardization have been held for the future operation. Besides, studies on applying
free-space laser communications to deep space areas are evolving. Recently, the free-space laser communications have been also focused on as one of the candidates to provide high data transmission rate under water. A consortium targeting underwater
optical communications has been established in 2018.
In this work, the activities on the free-space laser communications are introduced. Some peculiar procedures necessary for the free-space laser communications with moving counterparts and some specifications of equipment used in demonstrations
are shown. The results of the theoretical analysis and the experimental measurement are indicated to estimate the amount of fluctuations of the transmitted beam direction and the received beam intensity. The approaches to suppress the atmospheric
influences on the free-space laser communication systems are also introduces. |
