[Poster Presentation] External modulation scheme for Brillouin OCDR

(in English) All the configurations of Brillouin optical correlation-domain reflectometry (Brillouin OCDR; BOCDR) previously reported have been based on the direct modulation of the laser driving current. However, it poses three disadvantages: (i) standard lasers are not designed for high-speed large-amplitude modulation, (ii) frequency modulation inevitably accompanies power modulation, and (iii) the modulation amplitude and frequency are mutually dependent. To date, we have developed a new configuration called an external-modulation scheme and already demonstrated that the drawbacks (i) and (iii) can be mitigated in OCDR, which is based not on Brillouin scattering but on Rayleigh scattering and Fresnel reflection. However, distributed strain measurement based on BOCDR with the external-modulation scheme has not been demonstrated yet, because the power of the frequency-modulated light is not sufficiently high. In this work, by properly amplifying the frequency-modulated light, we demonstrate basic operation of BOCDR based on the external-modulation scheme. We show that, when strain of less than ~0.7% is applied to a 0.8-m-long section of a 2.8-m-long fiber, the obtained distributions of the Brillouin gain spectrum and the Brillouin frequency shift are in good agreement with simulation results.
