QoE-Aware Mitigation of Bitrate Fluctuation in MPEG-DASH

(in English) In recent years, along with popularization of smartphones and the like, video distribution services such as video streaming are being used by many people. MPEG-DASH (MPEG-Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) is widely adopted in order to improve user's quality of experience QoE (Quality of Experience) as the video streaming method. MPEG-DASH sequentially selects video data of an appropriate bit rate in accordance with the viewing environment of the user from downloaded video data of a fixed time encoded at a plurality of bit rates, downloads them, and sequentially reproduces them. Therefore, it is possible to reproduce the image as much as possible without interrupting it. One streaming method using this MPEG-DASH is to select a bit rate so as to keep the user's playback buffer constant, but in this method, since the bit rate to be selected is updated sequentially, the user's QoE There is a concern of reduction. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an adaptive video streaming method to improve QoE by minimizing the bit rate variation, which is one of the factors greatly affecting user's QoE, in video streaming using MPEG - DASH. In this method, in order to suppress the fluctuation of the bit rate, the bit rate to be selected is fixed when the playback buffer is not near the upper limit and the lower limit. Simulation confirms that the proposed method improves QoE compared with the conventional method.
