[Tutorial Lecture] MIMO Channel Propagation Parameter Estimation by Array Signal Processing

(in English) The user traffic in the mobile communication has significantly increased owing to the widespread of smartphones. Therefore, to improve the communication capacity, Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission scheme was employed in the 4th generation system, and the millimeter wave communication was practicalized in the 5th generation system.
Because the MIMO transmission performance heavily depends on the MIMO channel characteristics, it has been investigated in various communication environments to validate the system applicability to the mobile communication.
In the investigation, it is indispensable to distinguish the propagation channel characteristics from the effect of the antenna itself because the entire MIMO channel characteristics depend on both factors.
In this paper, we introduce the directional channel modeling approach for the purpose. And then we explain the various array signal processing algorithms to estimate the model parameters from the actual measured data.
