[Invited Lecture] 3GPP study on 5G NR based access to unlicensed spectrum

(in English) In the future radio access network, since newly available spectrum in the lower frequency bands, which have traditionally been used for mobile communication, has become very scarce, it would be necessary to utilize higher frequency resources in order to cope with increasing mobile traffic demand. Especially, unlicensed spectrum such as 5 GHz band attracts a lot of attention as a complementary tool for traffic off-loading from licensed spectrum. Therefore, 3GPP specified LAA (Licensed Assisted Access) technologies, where frequency resources in licensed band and in unlicensed band are aggregated and used as LTE to improve throughput, as a part of LTE-Advanced Pro. Additionally, Release 15 specification including 1st 5G NR (New Radio) specification was finalized in 3GPP, and as a part of next Release 16, a use of unlicensed spectrum based on 5G NR will be specified by March 2020. In this paper, we introduce technologies for the use of unlicensed spectrum based on 5G NR, which is often referred to as NR-U, including issues and potential solutions mainly discussed in NR-U study item.
