Employing satellites makes Automatic Identification System (AIS) signals available across the open oceans. As such a satellite system, JAXA has conducted an experiment named Space-based AIS Experiment (SPAISE) in Japan where satellites equipped with AIS receivers have been launched, and observed AIS signals suffering from the Doppler shift. The results show that the wide coverage of the satellites causes a collision of multiple AIS signal packets, which degrades their transmission performance severely. To cope with such collided packets, a separate detection scheme using SIC (Successive Interference Cancellation) has been investigated. However, the scheme can hardly achieve desired bit error rates (BERs) because the accuracy of the channel parameter estimation is insufficient. Therefore, this report proposes a decision-directed scheme to estimate the channel parameters more accurately by calculating correlation between detected data signals plus known pilot signals with received signals. To improve the BER performance furthermore, multiple-symbol combined differential detection is used rather than the simple differential detection. Computer simulations under Rician fading conditions clarify the improvement of the proposed scheme. |
