Mathematical Model for Simulating Human Foot-Lifting Movements onto One-Up Stair-Step

(in English) This research formulates an optimal control model for reproducing human foot-lifting movements onto one-up stair-step as a preliminary step toward developing a mathematical model of the human stair-climbing mechanism. The model predicts the optimal trajectory by minimizing its criterion function under constrained conditions derived from analyzing measured foot-lifting movements. Consequently, the following results are obtained: (1) the hip-, knee-, and ankle-joint angle profiles hold the minimum, maximum, and minimum points, respectively, (2) the value and the time of each extremum can be predicted by the specified stair rise; (3) the proposed model in which the above extremum information is introduced as constrained conditions can successfully reproduce measured foot-lifting trajectories. These results suggest that the extremum information of joint angle profiles characterizes foot-lifting movements, and that the proposed model can be an effective model of the human foot-lifting mechanism.
