The stiffness (shear modulus) of an abnormal tissue (e.g. fibrotic tissue and cancerous tissue) is different from that of a normal tissue. Hence, it is important to estimate the shear modulus distribution for determining the position, shape, and degree of progress of such an abnormal tissue. One way to estimate the shear modulus distribution is by employing magnetic resonance elastography (MRE). In conventional MRE approaches, the displacement field induced by elastic waves is measured by employing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) , and the shear modulus distribution is calculated on the basis of Navier's equation. However, owing to the assumption that the shear modulus is locally homogeneous, significant error in estimation can occur around the most important regions where elastic properties change discontinuously. Additionally, finite difference approximation of second order derivative terms of the displacement can cause vulnerability to noise. In this study, a novel method is proposed for estimating the shear modulus distribution from the ratio of the complex stress sum calculated through integration of the displacement data to the complex strain sum calculated from first order differentiation of the displacement data, where the real and imaginary components of the complex stress sum are deviatoric and shear stress, respectively, and those of the complex strain sum are deviatoric and shear strain, respectively. Furthermore, the robustness of the proposed method is also demonstrated in this study. |
