On the spatiotemporal information contained in spike responses of mouse retina ganglion cells

(in English) Information in the visual scene projected on the retina is encoded into the digital-like electrical signal called “spike” by the ganglion cells located at the retinal output stage for being sent to the brain. Based on the spatiotemporal patterns of the spikes, our brain generates visual perception of the outside world image that changes from moment to moment. Previous psychophysical experiments on human subjects have shown that the subjects can distinguish two different images presented simultaneously for the duration of only 20 msec. This result implies that a certain amount of information available for the image discrimination is encoded into the spatio-temporal patterns of spikes by the retinal ganglion cells in response to such a short duration of the image presentation. However, it has not been revealed exactly what kind of spike firing is generated by the real mammalian retinal ganglion cell in response to the flash image presentation. In this study, therefore we made measurements of the spike outputs from the ganglion cells in isolated mouse retinal preparations by means of the extracellular re-cording, and investigated the subtypes of the responses to light stimuli and statistical properties of the inter-spike intervals in those responses. Based on the experimental results, we discussed the possibility that short trains of spikes generated by some of the ganglion cell subtypes might be capable of encoding the information of the flashed image.
