Highly available metro transport network using multiple direction OXC

(in English) In optical transport networks, CAPEX (capital expenditure) and OPEX (operational expense) have to be reduced while keeping quality and availability of communication high since they are the common infrastructure shared among various communication services. Generally, in metro transport networks, which accommodate a large number of customers, hierarchical ring topology is adopted using two direction ROADM (reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer). Since ring topology doesn’t have tolerance against multiple failures, every failure has to be repaired within a few hours to keep availability high. It requires high OPEX. Besides, ring topology is not tolerant against wide-area natural disaster. In this paper, we discuss the effectiveness of mesh topology using multiple direction OXC by analyzing the availability and the number of deployed equipment for mesh topology compared to those for the hierarchical ring topology.
