A Study of Frame Queue Control for Real-Time VR Streaming on Edge Computing Networks

(in English) An edge computing is paid attention in recent years. The edge computing can provide higher quality services than existing cloud ones by locating compute resources near users. Also, VR services are becoming popular these days. Using remote VR rendering with the edge computing, users can experience high quality VR services without preparing an expensive PC which equips the latest GPU. When VR images are rendered on a remote server, extra encode/decode processes are needed and network delay to transfer the images are also added. Although an edge computing can decrease propagation delay compared with a cloud computing by decreasing propagation distance, the queueing delay is remained. The queueing delay might degrade quality of VR services. In this paper, we propose a new QoS control method which processes VR traffic based on an VR image’s frame, not a packet. We implemented our technique for Linux kernel. As a result of evaluation, the delay of most real-time VR frames is less than 1 ms under the environment where bursty congestion frequently occurs. We also show the result that the control per VR frame can reduce queueing delay than the control per packet.
