A Counter Synchronization Method for MAC generation in CAN Communication

(in English) The control of the automobile is realized by ECU. CAN is widely used as a network connecting the ECU. However, since CAN protocol is not secure, various attacks have been demonstrated against in-vehicle system. In message authentication proposed as a countermeasure against attacks, a counter value is used for MAC generation. Therefore, in order to authenticate the message correctly, the counters need to be synchronized. This study proposes a new synchronization method. Experimental results show that the proposed method synchronizes counters while reducing communication traffic.
