For the purpose of investigating influences of application of an external magnetic field on shortenings of break arc durations and arc plasma movements, a AgSnO2 contact pair was operated to break a load current of 14V-7A, 14V-12A, 20V-7A or 20V-17A in a DC inductive (L=5.7mH) load circuit at different contact opening speeds from 1 to 200 mm/s with an external magnetic field applied in different directions. Voltage and current waveforms of break arcs were measured, while simultaneously observing arc movements with a high-speed camera. Reductions of break arc durations were similarly observed with both directions of the applied magnetic field. With slower contact opening speeds or smaller load current levels, magnetic blowing was not observed even with application of external magnetic field, although break arcs became shorter. In the cases of no magnetic blowing, the arc plasma was moved in a direction opposite to the expected Lorentz force direction. The arc current level immediately prior to the arc plasma movement was found to be smaller in the cases with no magnetic blowing, as compared to those in the cases with magnetic blowing. |
