Long-haul MCF Transmission over 1,500-km using Full C+L-band 19-core Cladding-pumped EDFA

(in English) Space-division multiplexing (SDM) using a multi-core fiber (MCF) is an attractive technique for dramatically increasing the transmission capacity in a single optical fiber. Recently, MCF transmission experiments using a multi-core erbium-doped fiber amplifier (MC-EDFA) have been reported to realize integrated MCF transmission systems. Two types of MC-EDFA, core pumping scheme and cladding pumping scheme, have been proposed so far. Considering the integration of components in the repeater and the reduction of power consumption, the cladding-pumped MC-EDFA is more attractive. 111.6-km and 5,040-km MCF transmissions using the C-band 32-core or L-band 7-core cladding-pumped EDFA have been achieved so far. However, optical characteristics and transmission performance have been evaluated only with single-band MC-EDFAs. In this paper, full dual C+L-band 19-core cladding-pumped EDFA (19C-CP-EDFA) with 73-nm bandwidth has been fabricated and evaluated for the first time. In addition, long-haul 12-core fiber transmission over 1,500-km using 14 and 13 cores with worse NF in C- and L-band 19C-CP-EDFA has been confirmed.
