Parental reports on children's mental state language, at three years of age, predicts executive processing
Hiromi Tsuji (Osaka Shoin Univ.) HCS2018-63
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Mental state talk has been regarded as one of the key components for the development of social understanding such as the development of theory of mind. Also, theory-of-mind is also interrelated with the development of executive processing. The present study examined whether children’s mental state language measure by parental reports at three years old may be related concurrently and longitudinally with three components of executive functions: EFs (working memory, inhibitory control and shifting of attention). This short longitudinal study indicated that children’s mental state language as assessed by their parents at the time of entry into kindergarten related to both false-belief understanding and working memory. Measures taken 6-months later found that the initial mental state language measure no longer predicts false-belief understanding, but does relate to all three components of EFs. The role of mental state language in relation to the development of EFs and theory-of-mind is discussed.
