Investigation of visual guidance method of motor imagery for upper limb BCI rehabilitation

(in English) Recently, a rehabilitation method using Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) has been actively researched as a method for restoring motor function of movement disorder of hemiplegic patients due to stroke. In the motor paralysis rehabilitation method with BCI, the patient's intention to move out is extracted from event related desynchronization (ERD) by motor imagery and gives feedback to the patient. In this research, we focused attention on visual guidance which is often used in BCI rehabilitation system. In recent years, there have been reports that the BCI rehabilitation system that performs visual guidance with VR using the Head Mounted Display (HMD) raises the rehabilitation effect, but there are few reports that detailed investigation was made on the difference in the appearance effect of ERD when using HMD and display. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the effect of ERD appearance during motor imagery by HMD and two types of visual guidance methods. Experiments showed that it is better to detect the ERD during motor imagery than to do without visual guidance, but there was no difference in the appearance of ERD between HMD and display.
