Homogeneously and Homeotropically Aligned Liquid crystal Cells without Threshold Voltage

(in English) Hybrid aligned nematic (HAN) cells were designed using strong and weak polar anchoring surfaces. LC director distributions between strong and weak anchoring substrates and LC reorientations by the voltage application were numerically analyzed with the parameter of anchoring strength. When the homeotropic anchoring strength is less than K11/d and another planar anchoring surface anchoring is infinite, the cell shows a homogeneous orientation state in the voltage off-state. The quasi homogeneous cell has no threshold as well as the HAN cell. The quasi homeotropic cell can be obtained by using strong homeotropic anchoring and weak planar anchoring less than K33/d. In addition, quasi homogeneous and homeotropic cells can be designed by using a finite anchoring substrate instead of the infinite anchoring substrate, which gives us a very low driving voltage less than 0.5 volts.
