A reverse mode liquid crystal device in which a liquid crystal and a reactive mesogen (RM) are combined has been proposed to switch from a transparent state to a light scattering state by voltage application. In the reverse mode liquid crystal cell, light scattering between large and small liquid crystal domains can contribute to a low driving voltage. In this research, we tried to form large and small liquid crystal domains by using non-uniform UV irradiation using a photomask. We found an optimum line width and UV irradiation condition when using a linear photomask. In addition, electrooptical characteristics in reverse mode cells with homogeneous and twisted nematic alignments were compared. Furthermore, conditions to improve the mechanical strength of the device by nonuniform UV irradiation were also investigated. |
