Influences of contact opening speeds and external magnetic field on shortening of break arc durations of AgSnO2 contacts in a DC inductive load circuit up to 20V-17A

(in English) In a DC inductive (L=5.7mH) load circuit, a AgSnO2 contact pair with applied external magnetic field of about 120mT was operated to break a load current of 14V-12A, 20V-7A or 20V-17A at different contact opening speeds from 1 to 200 mm/s. Voltage and current waveforms of break arcs were measured, and arc movement was observed with a high-speed camera at each condition. With slower contact opening speeds or smaller load current levels, magnetic blowing was not observed even with applied magnetic field. Lorentz force in non-blowing cases were calculated from the observed arc current waveforms, resulting in estimation in which the minimum Lorentz force required to realize magnetic blowing will be around 0.08mN. However, in cases with slower contact opening speeds or smaller load current levels, magnetic field application still resulted in shortenings of break arcs, implying that any factors other than magnetic blowing seem to be involved in break arc shortening due to application of external magnetic field.
