High-Power, High-Beam-Quality Double-Lattice Photonic-Crystal Lasers

(in English) Achieving high-power and high-beam-quality (i.e. high-brightness) semiconductor lasers is important for laser processing and various sensing for next generation smart production and mobility. However, it is challenging for conventional semiconductor lasers to operate in high power while maintaining high beam quality. This is because increasing the output power necessitates expanding the lasing area, which leads to multimode oscillation and consequently compromises the beam quality. Here, we develop a double-lattice photonic-crystal resonator, where two photonic lattice groups separated by one-quarter wavelength in the x and y directions are superimposed. The double-lattice resonator enables high-power and high-beam-quality operation by strongly suppressing the multimode operation even when the lasing area is expanded. Using this resonator, we achieve 10 W high-power, high-beam-quality operation under room-temperature, pulsed conditions. In addition, an output power up to ~7 W is obtained under continuous-wave (CW) conditions.
