High-Altitude Platform Station (HAPS), which provides communications services from the altitude of 20km by utilizing balloon, airplane, or airship, is attracting much attention as a new mobile communications platform realizing ultra-wide coverage area and disaster-resilient networks.
It can provide mobile communications services directly to smartphones, which is commonly used in terrestrial mobile communications networks with 4th Generation Long Term Evolution (4G LTE).
In order to achieve large capacity, it is desirable to introduce a cellular system with one-cell frequency reuse as terrestrial mobile communications by installing several radio equipment on the HAPS.
HAPS provides cellular mobile communication services with various number of cells from 1 to more than 100 depending on its HAPS performance such as maximum payload weight and power consumption.
However, the conventional studies on HAPS have not investigated what cell configuration should be realized depending on the number of cells.
In this paper, we propose an optimization method of the cell configuration for a HAPS mobile communications, which can be generally applied regardless of the number of cells, and clarify the cell configuration and antenna parameters which realizes the cell configuration. |
