In the design of bandpass filters (BPFs), transmission zeros (TZs) can be generated at arbitrary frequency positions by using a generalized Chebyshev function, thereby providing a high degree of freedom for filter synthesis. A fully canonical N-th order Cul-de-Sac BPF can generate up to N TZs, which is the maximal number that can be produced by the filter synthesis theory. In order to generate N TZs, a source to load coupling must be introduced, resulting in low attenuation level at stopband. To solve this problem, a novel Cul-de-Sac coupling topology having two resonators between source and load is introduced in this paper for large attenuation level at stopband. In addition, a microstrip BPF realizing the novel Cul-de-Sac coupling topology is also proposed. The proposed BPF employs even/odd-mode stepped impedance resonators for a wide stopband response. The effectiveness of the proposed Cul-de-Sac BPF are demonstrated through two design examples. The first design example is a fifth-order BPF having two TZs at lower stopband and one TZ at upper stopband, while the second one is a sixth-order BPF which having two TZs at symmetric frequency positions with respect to center frequency. The validity of the proposed Cul-de-Sac coupling topology and its microstrip BPF structure is verified by the comparison of the frequency responses between EM-simulated and measured results. |
