Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Widely tunable lasers (T-LD) had been developed for WDM CW light source during IT bubble since the system makers had to prepare all the channels as inventory such as 96 channels, which was a headache. System makers preferred DFB lasers since they had been qualified for telecommunication as signal sources both terrestrial and undersea usage, and ensured wavelength stability and reliability. We selected DFB lasers for T-LDs at Furukawa. Based on DFB lasers, we have developed T-LDs with high output power. To respond an emerging digital coherent communication systems, we have optimized T-LDs so that these LDs can achieve the narrow spectral linewidth. Our -ITLA (micro Integrable Tunable Laser Assembly, which includes driving control circuits compliant with OIF standard size, can achieve less than 300kHz of spectral linewidth with an coupled power of 16dBm. Since this kind of T-LDs have contained at least 12 DFB lasers monolithically integrated with MMI, SOA, we have succeeded in achieving high yield for mass production after lots of efforts for manufacturing these products. A narrow spectrum linewidth less than 100 kHz with an coupled power of 19dBm was achieved by introducing DR laser and AWG. Packaging technology is also important in terms of performance, reliability, mass production, since it contains some optical devices such as optical isolators, wavelength lockers inside. We also developed the way to fix these elements using UV based resin, which enable us to realize small size and low cost.
In this talk, we will present these activity, including history of laser development at FURUKAWA
