Semiconductor-based three-dimensional chiral photonic crystals having a helical periodicity of telecom wavelength scale were successfully fabricated by a micro-manipulation technique. Photoluminescence measurement for quantum dots in the chiral structures showed that the emitted infrared light was strongly polarized in circular polarization whose handedness was consistent with the structural chirality. In addition, time-resolved photoluminescence measurement showed different radiative lifetime between the two orthogonal circular polarizations, indicating that the chiral photonic crystal modified photonic density of states for circularly polarized components in the vacuum field fluctuation. These results can be applied to compact circularly polarized emitters without any polarizers or wave plates, and to spin polarizing devices without any external magnetic field or spin injection. |
