[Invited Lecture] An Experimental Study on Delay Characteristics in VHF Band

(in English) In the wireless communications using a VHF band, while the long distance transmission with low attenuation is expectable, the long delay becomes the main factors which degrade wireless circuit quality. The bit error rate of the digital signal in a multiple propagation path has a close relation to a delay spread, and the delay spread makes us the maximum transmission rate determine in general. Therefore, in order to achieve a desired transmission rate, it is necessary to remove the influence of the long delay. As one of the solutions against the long delay, application of the adaptive equalization is effective. It equalized sequentially a wave distortion according to the change situation of a transmission path. It depends for the performance of the adaptive equalization on the delay width and the number of arrival delay waves. We carried out some field research to obtain the delay characteristics in rural area. In this report, we show the experimental results for various delay characteristics using a VHF band, such as the delay spread, the delay width and the number of arrival delay waves in rural area.
