A Study on Efficient Spectrum Utilization for Feeder Link using Multipe Gateways in HAPS System

(in English) HAPS (High Altitude Platform Station), which is a stratosphere platform around 20Km altitude, cellular communication service makes it possible to directly communicate among ordinary land cellular phones. HAPS is also a promising system for service area expansions as well as reliable communication methods at various natural disasters. HAPS communication system is composed of service links which provide communications between HAPS and land cellular phones and a feeder link which establishes a communication between HAPS and a base station (Gateway). The communication capacity of HAPS service link is determined by the communication capacity of its feeder link, which is equivalent to repeater frequency. Therefore, an efficient spectrum usage of the feeder link is indispensable. In this paper, we propose a “Multiple Gateway System” for an efficient spectrum usage. Multiple Gateways placed on the land transmit and receive different feeder link signals at the same frequency. The proposed system can improve the efficient spectrum utilization as the number of Gateways increases by eliminating the interferences among feeder links.
