[Invited Talk] 5G as an enabler for automated driving

(in English) In addition to extending the capabilities of 4G networks with enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), 5G will provide new capabilities in the new domains of Ultra Reliable and Low Latency Communication (URLLC). On the other hand, automated driving of vehicles will likely come soon due to emerging enablers, such as sensor technologies and image recognition by Artificial Intelligent. Fully automated driving is, however, still said to be technically challenging. Recently, an application of radio communication to vehicle control has been studied and good results have been reported, e.g. Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) in which radio communication technology is applied to conventional ACC for cooperation. This report overviews automated driving and its enabling technologies and discusses potential use cases from viewpoint of how 5G’s new capabilities, such as high throughput and low latency, can be applied to automated driving.
