[Poster Presentation] WPM-Based Transmission with Equalization-Aware Bit Loading

(in English) Wavelet packet modulation (WPM) is an emerging multi-carrier modulation (MCM) technique, considered as a potential alternative to widely used orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). In OFDM, equalization can be achieved using one-tap equalization because it uses cyclic prefix (CP). However, WPM cannot rely on the use of CP for equalization because WPM symbols overlap in the time domain. This research employs minimum mean-square error (MMSE) equalization for WPM in the time domain instead of the frequency domain to reduce the computational complexity. MMSE equalization with a moderate filter length induces subcarrier attenuation and noise amplification. A bit loading algorithm is proposed which considers these imperfections of MMSE equalization. Analytical expressions for the bit error rate (BER) are derived and validated using simulation results. The performance evaluation is conducted in different test environments as per Recommendation ITU-R M.1225. Numerical results show that equalization-aware bit loading further reduces the BER compared to MMSE equalization alone. WPM and OFDM are compared in terms of the BER performance; numerical results show that WPM outperforms OFDM. In addition, influence of different wavelet filter lengths on the BER performance is investigated; numerical results show that the BER performances are almost the same for different wavelet filter lengths.
