[Poster Presentation] Observation of GAWBS noise and development of its compensation technique in digital coherent optical transmission

(in English) Guided acoustic-wave Brillouin scattering (GAWBS) noise is an optical phase fluctuation that occurs coherently with thermally excited vibration modes in a cylindrical fiber structure. Since GAWBS noise propagates in the transmission direction, it may degrade the quality of the transmitted optical data signal. We showed that an optical phase noise of more than 1 degree was applied to the data signal after a 160 km transmission, which indicates GAWBS noise may become a critical issue in an ultra-multilevel QAM transmission such as 1024 QAM. To compensate for the phase noise, we have newly proposed a reverse phase modulation (RPM) method, where GAWBS information was detected by using a pilot tone and fed back to the data signal in a reverse phase relation. Furthermore, we have successfully removed an error floor caused by GAWBS noise in a polarization-multiplexed 1024 QAM-160 km transmission with RPM method.
