Comparison of magnetic pulse welding method of Al/Cu sheets using 4, 8 and 16-turn flat coils

(in English) Magnetic pulse welding of sheets is performed by flowing a large discharge current rapidly from a capacitor bank to a flat coil. When using the multi-turn coils to reduce the discharge current, it is necessary to select the bank capacity. In this report, inorder to make the rise time of the current as equal as possible, the bank capacity at the time of discharge is selected as 24, 6 and 1.5μF for the 4, 8 and 16-turn coils respectively. After two or four same capacitors are charged in parallel they are discharged in series to the 8 or 16-turn coil to reduce the bank capacity. Overlapping Al/Cu sheets with a gap are placed on these three coils of approximately the same appearance and can be electromagnetically welded. Based on the experimental results using the 4 and 8-turn coils, we compare three kinds of welding methods. When the discharge energy required for welding is about 0.7 kJ, the peak values of the discharge currents flowing through the 4, 8 and 16-turn coils are about 41, 21 and 11 kA, respectively, and when the number of turns is doubled, it decreases to about 1/2 .
