This invited talk introduces prospects for the 5th generation mobile systems (5G) and KDDI activities for commercialization of 5G.
At the beginning, the background that KDDI focuses on and has been highly involved in 5G is explained while showing KDDI’s business strategy. This talk then introduces an overview on evolutional history of mobile systems and requirements of 5G from international standardization bodies such as International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) followed by characteristics of candidate 5G frequency bands in Japan. In addition, Beamforming and Beam-tracking technologies as well as Non Stand-alone architecture that utilizes existing 4G LTE networks are highlighted to utilize high frequency bands for 5G in mobility environment. This talk also touches upon Network-slicing technology which is one of the key functions in 5G and is expected to realize various service requirements depending on customers and applications.
Furthermore, collaborative experiments and demonstrations with various companies, such as handover in a high speed environment, 8K real-time video-stream in uplink transmission from moving vehicles, and remote control of construction machines, are presented. Also, service examples for end customers including free navigation video at a baseball stadium using 5G are introduced. |
