Experimental Analysis: A possibility of estimating TV white space spectrum sensing using altitude information by low-cost SDR devices

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Accurate detection of TV White Space in the VHF and UHF frequency bands is important in realizing the potential of its technology and use in the field of broadband Internet access and cognitive radio. However, in VHF/UHF spectrum sensing, it is recommended to use an antenna height of at least 10 meters above ground level for better reception. In most cases, when such height is not attainable, spectrum analyzers and spectrum sensing systems use propagation models to account for it which can result to inaccurate detection. In this paper, we introduce the use of software-defined radio for spectrum sensing combined with altitude information that account for the area characteristic and sensing situation to better compensate for the antenna height requirements. Based on experiments and signal strength analysis carried out at different altitude levels, we determine when at high altitudes and on tall buildings, if there is a need to add invariable constants deduced from propagation models to account for antenna height.
