Surface composition and chemical bond structure of Zr-based metallic glass

(in English) It has been reported that the Zr-based bulk metallic glass alloy commonly known as Vit 105 (Zr_{52.5}Cu_{17.9}Ni_{14.6}Al_{10}Ti_{5}) exhibits better corrosion resistance, as compared to the alloy containing no Ti atoms. In this study, to investigate the physical and chemical origins of the corrosion resistance, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) measurements have been carried out for both the Vit 105 and Zr 55 (Zr_{55}Cu_{30}Al_{10}Ni_{5}) alloys. Elemental compositions, chemical bonding states, and thicknesses of the passivation layers on both alloys were obtained from depth profile of core-level spectra. Moreover, exact rate of initial oxidation started from bulk surface without the passivation layer was obtained by real-time XPS. The results demonstrated that main composition of the passivation layers on both alloys is zirconium oxide, with some amount of aluminum oxide and titanium oxide in Vit 105, while there are no presence of copper and nickel in the layers. It was also found that there are almost no differences in the thickness of the passivation layer and the initial oxidation rate between both alloys.
