People meet other person, other objects, culture or nature, and interact them in space. Affective perception of space always mediates such interaction. Studies on affective space are not sufficient compared to those on affective products. There are two representative types in affective space perception. The first one is the sense of presence that corresponds to the subjective experience of being in particular place or environment, even when viewers are physically situated in another place. The other type is the sense of verisimilitude that corresponds to the subjective feeling of trueness and essence of space. Based on the results obtained in a series of psychological experiments, we demonstrated that the sense of presence tends to be based on the principle of sensory amplification, while the sense of verisimilitude tends to be maximum at moderate levels of stimulus intensity, following the principle of inverse effectiveness and cognitive completion. The both types of approach are important for advanced media technology. |
